We are a group of Christian seekers who practice and promote Centering Prayer.
Centering Prayer is a method of receptive prayer, of silent resting in God, whom we know by faith is within us. It is both a relationship with God and a means to foster that relationship. It is a contemporary name for the practice based on the wisdom saying of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount:“...But when you pray, go to your inner room, close the door and pray to your Father in secret. And your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you” MT 6:6 When in the Gospels Jesus is said to have gone off to a solitary place and spent the night in prayer, most likely he was engaged in that kind of silent prayer.
Centering Prayer has also been inspired by writings of major contributors to the Christian contemplative heritage including Saints Francis de Sales, Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross, and Thérèse of Lisieux.. This kind of “resting in God” was the classical meaning of contemplative prayer in the Christian tradition for the first sixteen centuries, was revived by Thomas Merton, Thomas Keating and others in the 20th Century, and has been a growing practice among Christians in recent years.
We warmly welcome anyone interested in joining us or in learning more about Centering Prayer. We meet as a group Thursdays 7:30-8:30 PM. in the Conference Room off the Parish Center Lobby.
