Music Ministry

The Music Ministry at Holy Name of Mary strives to be embodied musical prayer that provides support to our Pastoral Team focus in Liturgy, serving as a visible outgrowth of our congregation. It is our hope that our music is both evangelizing and welcoming to our fellow parishioners and non-parishioners. The Music Ministry at Holy Name of Mary is committed to upholding the Word of God, inviting the young, encouraging hope through uplifting music, and empowering response by everyone.

Music Ministry Programs:

Children’s Choir

The Children’s Choir is an extension of Religious Education and will rehearse with their teachers, utilizing CDs created or selected by the Music Director, in collaboration with the Religious Education Director and the Catechists. They rehearse, whenever possible within the class times, with the Religious Education/Music Ministry Liaison. Other Music Ministry team members will be enlisted as needed. They will perform selections seasonally, and at events that would call for the voices of our youth. “Listen to the purest praises, as we hear the little children sing…Celebrating as a family, all God’s children sing unto the Lord.”

Quite often, Children’s Choirs are an outgrowth of classes receiving the Sacraments, or are generated for special holiday services. Sacrament-related service music is rehearsed during Religious Education classes. A Christmas pageant, or other special event, will have its own rehearsal schedule announced.

Children’s choir welcomes children of all ages. However, for special occasions, choir members will be expected to be attentive and have the self –discipline to rehearse for 30 - 45 minutes. A few parent volunteers who can stay on hand as “Gentle Shepherds” during that time frame would be greatly appreciated.

JVE --- Junior Vocal Ensemble

The Junior Vocal Ensemble is a core of exceptional young singers that support the Music Ministry at Sunday Masses, and will also serve as leaders for the growing Children’s Choir. It is expected that a JVE member’s musical contributions and behavior will be exemplary as role models for the Children’s Choir members. The JVE tends to sing more contemporary Christian Music at the 10:45 Masses and High Holidays; and JVE recruitment is by invitation of the director. Any parent who feels their child fits the JVE criteria is certainly welcome to approach the director to schedule an informal interview and screening.

JVE meets on Thursdays from 6:00 – 6:30 PM. (We do not meet when Religious Education is on vacation.) Occasionally the JVE might have an extended practice. To receive any updates or adjustments in the schedule, please provide the Music Director with your email and contact information.

Adult Choir

The Adult Choir presently meets on Thursday evenings at 7:30 --- mostly for seasonal events, and also for those who enjoy singing as an ensemble at the 10:45 mass. We would love to have a small choir for the 5 PM and even the 8 AM! Any of you folks who believe that you can “sing and change your world,” and who would like to share the joy of singing unto the Lord are welcome to join us! Adult choir will be on break for the summer, although it may be called on now and then to bring a song for meditation, or present a piece that suits a special occasion.

Cantors/Leaders of Song

--- are volunteers who feel the call of God to share their musical skills and gifting of prayer with the HNM congregation. It is advisable that cantors have a strong tonal memory and a strong ability to lead songs. This position requires a great deal of commitment learning music regularly to fit the church calendar, and adhering to the schedule in a responsible manner. New cantors may join up at any point during the church year, and commit to serving in a frequency that suits their abilities and personal schedules.

Cantor preparation is generally held on Thursday evenings at 7 PM ( & by appointment during summer)

Potential leaders of song may request an informal interview/audition with the director for joining the cantor team.

Instrumentalists are also welcome to do the same! We are always looking for ways to expand the reach of the music ministry and its programs! Presently, the 10:45 Mass incorporates multiple instrumentalists to compliment the JVE music and overall for a more upbeat and contemporary flavor. We would welcome newcomers!
